Lehman borrowed huge sums to finance its investments in the years preceding bankruptcy in 2008, a process known as leverage or gearing. A large proportion of this investment was in housing-related assets, making it vulnerable to a slowdown in market.Customers often reluctant to trade with dealers whose parent companies are in bankruptcy, so the longer Lehman waits to sell its broker-dealer unit.
